Identification and Control of Fungus Gnats in Winnipeg’s Indoor Plant Culture During Winter Months

- Surface barriers: Covering the soil surface can deter egg-laying. A thin (¼–1 inch, ~0.5–2.5 cm) layer of coarse sand, fine gravel, or diatomaceous earth over the potting mix prevents gnats from reaching the moist soil beneath[34][35]. Over time this dryness on top will “eventually stop reproduction” as fungus gnat adults avoid laying eggs on exposed sand[35]. Any barrier helps, but sand is often recommended because it does not compact and stays relatively dry.
- Clean soil and pots: If an infestation is severe, consider repotting the plant in fresh, sterile soil. Remove the plant from its pot, gently rinse the roots, and discard the old growing medium which likely harbors larvae and pupae[36]. Reuse a clean pot with good drainage. Products containing Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) which is commonly sold as mosquito dunks or Gnatrol can be watered into the soil to kill fungus gnat larvae[37].
